Objectives: This study developed and tested a solution-focused group counseling program as an intervention for elementary school students presenting symptoms of Internet addiction. The program was designed to improve the students¡¯ self-esteem and ability to cope with stress.
Method: The participants were six 6th grade students identified as being at risk of Internet addiction. The students participated in a total of eight 90-minute sessions of solution-focused group counseling. The researchers performed the Mann-Whitney U Test and the Wilcoxon Signed-Ranks Test to determine whether the counseling program was effective.
Results: The solution-focused group counseling program was found to improve the students¡¯ self-esteem and ability to cope with stress.
Conclusions: Despite the fact that most of the students in the group counseling program did not voluntarily participate, the results demonstrated that the students¡¯ short-term and positive characteristics, such as the ability to solve problems, improved as a result of their involvement in the program.
